The 2028 Ford F-150 Lightning is expected to arrive with an updated design compared to the current model on sale, though we don’t have any clues on how extensive the design changes will be. Until the redesign arrives, we expect to see the current F-150 equipped with new variants, including the 2025 F-150 Lobo. We expect the 2028 F-150 Lightning to be available in multiple configurations, including body styles and bed sizes. While those numbers are significant, what is more important is what you can do with them. And here, it’s a mixed bag for the F-150 Lightning compared to its internal-combustion siblings. The Lightning has a maximum tow rating of 10,000 pounds and a maximum payload of 2,235 pounds. Both formations are considerably higher than the 3.3-liter V6 F-150’s ratings of 8,200 and 1,985 pounds, respectively, but fail far short of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost F-150’s 14,000 and 3,250 pounds. The Lightning sits closest to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost F-150 configuration, boasting a 10,000-pound towing capacity and 2,480 pounds of hauling capacity.

The ride quality is excellent, smooth, and compliant, and is easily the kind of thing I’d want to do for long expeditions. Yea, I know it’s an EV, which you may not think would be excellent for road-tripping, but 320 miles of range is equivalent to four or five hours of driving. With the correct charger, the Lightning can regain a 80% charge just deep over 40 minutes. That 150-kW charging rate is far slower than we see from products like the Porsche Taycan, but a 40-minute break after 5 hours in the saddle doesn’t sound so bad to me. Additionally, the truck’s navigation system is intelligent enough to route you to and through those charging stops.

Although competitive in the segment, the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning’s price is still a tough pill to swallow, as even the base XLT model starts at $62,995 MSRP. Luckily, it is eligible for up to $7,500 Federal EV Tax Credit. Starting with the Flash, at $67,995, every other trim level comes with the larger battery for maximum driving range. The Lariat and Platinum are the more premium models in the lineup, selling for $76,995 and $84,995, respectively.
